That's why people say Diablo 3 doesn't start until post game, because it does. Rifts and Greater Rifts mean you never have to go visit any part of the story part of the game again, they also happen to be the best places to find item upgrades. They reworked the loot system away from pure random with insanely rare drop rates to the loot 2.0 system where there are some fairly rare items but the drops you find will be tailored to your character. Stats were boiled down to mostly automatic with each class wanting to stack as much of 1-2 stats as possible. You can change your skills at any point in time. Same as Diablo 1, play new characters and try to beat the game using what you find.ĭiablo 3 went way more into the action theme of an action rpg and away from the more roguelike elements that Diablo came from. Build an insanely godly character in order to hunt down all of the rarest things in the game. So the point of Diablo 2 tends to be 1 of 2 things for people. Sometimes that meant starting over and optimizing your build because respecs did not exist at the time and it was quite easy to build a character that would never beat hell difficulty. Since the monsters respawn, the game loop became go as far as you can and then farm the highest level area you can until you can level up and find items good enough to beat the game. Maps are still random but monsters respawn when you save and quit and then reload the game. You cannot start a new game with the same character, you have to make a new one. So the point of Diablo 1 was to try and get a character from nothing to killing Diablo as many times as you want.ĭ2 doubled down on some of those things and undid others. This created a game loop of going as far as you can, restarting with the same character (or a new one if you chose), and repeating until you killed Diablo. So once you cleared an area, it was empty until you started a new game. Diablo 1 was a relatively short game where everything you will see in your current playthrough was random but you couldn't reset anything without starting a new game with the same character. The design has changed quite a bit over the years. Reading through this sub, people are saying that the "real game" begins post game.
